Labelled as “Grand Site de France” (Remarkable Natural Site of France); with an space of nearly 40 000 hectares, this area has the particularity of carrying on four classified sites: These entities are representative of the different landscape identities of the Camargue Gardoise: marshes, reedbeds on the Tour Carbonnière site, ponds and salt marshes around Aigues-Mortes, dunes, sansouires and brackish marshes in the Espiguette site; all facets of this territory. The strong attractiveness of the beaches and the built heritage (Cité d'Aigues-Mortes and Tour Carbonnière) contribute to an annual attendance of more than 2 million visitors. The intense light reflected in the waters of marshes and lagoons, the diversity of environments over the seasons and the vagaries of the weather give the landscapes of the Camargue its unique character. Land of Freedom The Tour Carbonnière raising in the middle of the marshes creates a privileged observatory allowing to comprehend the landscape of the Camargue Gardoise. At the top, from the terrace, you can discover this unique and exceptional wetland : ponds, meadows, marshes, reedbeds...
This safe haven has become the kingdom of aigrettes garzettes, gray herons, water chickens, coypu and many other species of birds and mammals. Here, gently graze the horses and bulls of the Camargue. Tour Carbonnière - Ancient road of Aigues-Mortes Mahistre - Beautiful protected area in the middle of the Camargue, the domain of Mahistre is a vast stretch of 136 hectares.
This area of marshes and lagoons is classified as Réserve Naturelle Régionale (County natural reserve). It is only accessible on guided tours (pre-registration required). Because of its inaccessibility, it is a paradise for all birds that frequent the region. The domain is representative of the Camargue Gardoise (reedbeds, jonchaies, sansouïres, ponds etc.), a great diversity with more than 150 species of birds then the presence of a large population of the very threatened aquatic tortoise Cistude attesting of the Exceptional heritage value of this area. The Scamandre Discovery Center is the structure that was created to organize the reception of the public in the Scamandre regional nature reserve. The regional nature reserve is located on the edge of the Scamandre pond, in the La Fromagère and Buisson-Gros areas. The site, developed for agriculture in the late 1960s, has now regained its original character with specific stands. The Center du Scamandre offers several loop trails (4 km for the longest.). Connection points between the paths allow visitors to adapt their ride to the time available and to choose an itinerary according to their centers of interest. The route on stilts offers the possibility of walking in the heart of the marshes and reaching three observation and listening points, it is accessible by wheelchair and is labeled "Tourism and Handicap." A large picnic area and toilets is available on site opening hours and days. It offers a discovery trail, a permanent exhibition, an event program and entertainment. The pedestrian route (1.6 km) to be done independently or accompanied by a guide, walks through typical Camargue Gard environments, you will go to meet the fauna, flora and history of the territory. The permanent exhibition “The Camargue domesticated by Man”: retraces the role of men in the making and maintenance of Camargue landscapes. The Camargue Gardoise is a very unique territory with flat landscapes and strongly influenced by water. The ceaseless struggle of the Rhône, the Vidourle and the sea, combined with the action of man have constituted over the ages a mosaic of environments and landscapes of rare richness.
On foot, by bike: discover the Camargue safely and freely with its 130 km of marked paths. Greenways along the Rhône to Sète canal for hikers, cyclists, rollerbladers, people with reduced mobility - more than 30 km of walks in the heart of the Grand Site de France; from the Tour Carbonnière to Gallician, in Aigues-Mortes to Espiguette.
